Hi, I’m Alaina Zemanick!

(uh-lane-uh zem-ma-nick)

I am a UX designer with over five years of experience working in the art world. I spent the earlier part of my career focused on art historical research while in graduate school, working as a research assistant both in the academic context and in galleries. I then pivoted towards arts communications, most recently working as a press liaison in a gallery in Chelsea.

I first started to think deeply about UX design when the art world was faced with the question of how to show art virtually at the start of the COVID pandemic in March 2020. With public spaces shut down, institutions and art fairs adopted the concept of viewing rooms to curate digital exhibitions and display works of art. In my role as a press liaison, I was tasked with deploying a viewing room platform and building virtual art fair booths, but I encountered some sticky situations on the backend: why was a particular task not intuitive? Why was my work suddenly deleted by the mere click of the button? Why were there no affordances communicated to prevent user error?

I then enrolled in a UX design MOOC to answer these questions for myself. What I ultimately discovered was a new-found passion, a career path in which I could apply my arts knowledge to create well-designed products for the user. In July 2021, I completed an immersive UX design apprenticeship to gain expertise in design principles and industry standards. I even built a viewing room platform to remedy the problems I faced— it all comes full circle!

As a UX designer, I have a penchant for creating art-inspired visuals and completing diligent UX research, which result in distinctive, accessible designs. Informed by my unique career path, I bring an aesthetic lens honed by years of looking at art professionally and research skills sharpened through art historical studies to my work.

In my free time, you can find me visiting museums and galleries, watching classic movies at home, making cocktails for friends, or walking my dog, Evie, around our neighborhood in Brooklyn.
